I received an email from Yahoo and followed the link. Why do you need my SSAN?

Hello Yahoo member,
Thanks for selling on Yahoo! Auction.

According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the Yahoo account by completing the following form or else your account will be suspended within 24 hours for investigations. As the credit card owner, you’re the only one who has access to this.
To avoid this suspension please log-in here and provide us with the information requested.
Due to the possible suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using Yahoo in any way. This includes the registering of a new account.
The process takes about 5 minutes to complete and involves updating your Yahoo information. Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed-upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to Yahoo.

If you have any questions, please visit our Help Pages. For more help, just shoot an email to our support staff.
Thanks,
The Yahoo! Auction Team

That email is not legitimate. It’s called “phishing” and is an imposter trying to pretend to be a Yahoo! Staff member to get personal information. With this information they can apply for credit cards, bank accounts, or loans without your knowledge or permission, and can destroy your future.

Here’s somethign to remember:
No website that you have to join will ever send you an email asking for your credit card number, bank account number, name, account password, social security number, address, or any other personal information. No bank will ever ask you for that information. No internet service provider will ever ask you for that information.

Ever. Never never never ever.

Follow that rule, and you’ll be just fine.
