Finding a New Home in the UK

For people in the UK there are many places where a person can search for a new property to buy.  Traditional forms of marketing combined with more recent technologies mean that the UK public have never had more options when looking for a new home.

Traditionally the majority of home purchases take place via estate agencies.  This is still the case today and so most people looking for a new home will visit their local estate agent.  There are many reasons why estate agents remain popular.  By using an agent, home buyers benefit from being able to deal face to face with someone with expert knowledge of the property market.  Once the buyer has outlined the type of property they are looking for the agent can search for properties on their behalf.  Generally agents will have local knowledge and so they are well placed to give location specific advice and recommendations.  As well as the properties advertised in their window all estate agents will have a portfolio of properties for which they are trying to find a buyer.

Another traditional place where people will search for a new home is in newspapers and other publications.  Properties advertised in printed media will usually be focused on a certain location and type of property.  This means that people can save time by not having to search through properties that do not match their interests.  Most property adverts in newspapers will have been placed by estate agents although some will have been added by the homeowners themselves.  Viewing local newspaper adverts continue to be a highly valued method for searching for a new home.

In recent years the internet has emerged as a very popular tool for searching for a new home.  Using the internet property buyers are able to quickly find and shortlist suitable properties for which to arrange viewings.  There are now several well known UK property sites.  Websites such as Right Move and WOW Property allow people to make tailored searches for homes that are available to buy.  Typically users of these sites are able to search on criteria including the type of property, location, price and number of bedrooms.  Most local estate agents will now also have a web presence.

While estate agents, newspapers and the internet are the starting point of the vast majority of property sale there are other alternatives.  For example an increasing number of homes are being sold at auction.  Homes sold at auction tend to be those that have been repossessed or ones that need considerable renovation and represent a small percentage of the property market.
