Can you really win an eBay auction if you bid on an item in the last minute?

Ive recently decided to make a eBay account, and I want to buy some trading cards off the site but the prices are very low. I want to try and see if you bid on an item with a minute left supply (assuming that no one else bids on it) and I hope he wins. Will that work, alerts and be informed of offers put on the subject, and when time is running out for you. Then try bidding at the last minute or two. You will have to be quick and alert when because many people have the same strategy.
