Housing Auction Nyc
If you were Matt Murphy, the 21 year old guy from NYC who caught Barry Bonds record 756th HR ball, would you?
have made a verbal promise to the media like he did saying that he would give 49% of the net proceeds to his buddy who he went to the game with? I certainly wouldn’t of. At first it seemed like the nice thing to say. But now that it sold for $752,000, and after paying the auction house 20%, Murphy gets around $620,000, that means he has to pay his buddy $310,000k plus on top of that he has to pay taxes for this. What an idiot. I would’ve said nothing. People tend to get greedy when stuff like this happens and all of a sudden it’s like, boom, you won and lottery and are kinda rich. I would’ve sold it and then “maybe” given my buddy like $15,000 as a gift and said thanks. Now, if he doesn’t give him 49%, he looks like an idiot, does anyone else agree with me?
If he comes out with 200K+ that he didn’t have and his buddy does too, that’s two lives that are irrevocably changed, and that’s pretty damn cool. Let’s not fault him for generosity–unless he reneges on the deal. But yeah, making promises like that in the excitement of the moment is probably not the best deal. Better to just keep quiet and hook your buddy up if you feel like it without proclaiming it out loud.
