how to sell properties / paintings to auction houses?

I would like to sell some properties and contemporain paintings in auctions in NYC or around; do you know how and where. thank you

you do not sell the paintings or objects directly to the auction house. Look in phone directory for Manhattan and you will find the auction houses. They usually only take fine art that is by known artists already making good sales (whether dead or alive.)

they take them on consignment and you will pay about 40-50% of the final selling price to them for a commission.

Prior to taking them to any dealer, collect all provenance information you can gather on each piece. If you have bills of sale, attach to each piece. If they were inheritances, show any proof that you inherited them. Provenance is very important to the sale. You can not just show up with a painting by a famous artist and not tell how you came by it. If it was a gift, then type out a statement of how you got it and from whom, the date, circumstances etc and have that statement notarized (one for each piece.)

You will need to pay for appraisal, certification documents if you do not have them. do this before you do anything else.

Make a list of allitems. Do not leave any item with any dealer or appraiser without a receipt or contract.

Contact someone from your yellow pages probably under Art Appraisal or Art Dealers, Antiquities, Fine ARt, etc. Ask if they deal in these items and can sell them for you on consignment. Most of the reputable ones will tell you immediately if the works you have are not in their fields . they will frequently have enough contacts in the industry to refer you to someone reliable and reputable.

if the work is not by someone well known, then take it to galleries in the area that sell they type of work they are, e.g. modern or post modern painting. They will take them on consignment for a set period of time, again, you will pay them a commission of 40-50%
