what are some tips to making serious amounts of gold on the auction house in WOW?

There is never no real easy way to make easy gold. Certain methods will vary from server to server.

The only real tip I can give is to make sure you use the Auctioneer Addon and scan the auction daily (even more if possible) so you can get a good idea of certain items market price. Scan for a couple of days to get a good idea of item values.

Once you have a good idea of market values you can check the AH daily looking for items that are listed at below value (as far as I remember Auctioneer shows the item to be a % of the market value). Look for items that are being sold for around 50% or less of the value. These items you can generally (not always, item dependant) be relisted for profit.
